Voice of Maslon
My summer at Maslon was a defining experience that has significantly shaped the direction of my legal career. From day one, I worked on substantive assignments that first-year summer associates might not typically handle. Some of my assignments included drafting portions of a pre-trial brief, contributing to a demand letter, and writing memos on complex legal issues. This experience was both rewarding and instrumental in advancing my research and writing skills.
On top of the meaningful work, the summer program offered numerous opportunities for experiential learning. I observed hearings, sat in on a meet-and-confer, joined client conference calls, participated in mock oral arguments, volunteered at the Wills for Heroes Clinic, and attended specialized trainings. I especially valued Maslon’s focus on introducing us to law firm economics and business development—topics often overlooked by other firms for younger associates.
What truly exceeded my expectations was not only the quality of the projects but also Maslon’s full investment in my growth. Beyond providing feedback on my work, the attorneys went the extra mile to discuss areas for improvement, highlight what I did well, and explain how my work fit into the larger picture. They actively sought ways for me to contribute to ongoing cases and kept me informed on how matters progressed, making me feel like a valued contributor. Seeing my work used to counsel clients, inform legal strategy, and even be filed with the court was one of the most rewarding aspects of my summer!
Another highlight was the chance to work with different practice groups. As a first-generation law student, this exposure introduced me to diverse practice areas I hadn’t previously considered and helped me identify which areas of law best suited my interests. My first assignment, a pro bono case, also showed me that working in private practice and within a specific practice group doesn’t preclude me from pursuing cases I’m passionate about. Maslon’s robust pro bono structure and commitment to pro bono work allows for many avenues to give back to the community as a legal professional.
In addition to the formal mentors I was assigned—a writing mentor, an associate mentor, and a partner mentor—I found that everyone at the firm was eager to offer guidance. Throughout the summer, I would walk around the office, knock on doors, and ask questions. Every time, I was met with enthusiastic support, reflecting Maslon’s strong culture of mentorship and collaboration. The firm’s consistently small summer classes also foster a sense of continuity and community. Many Maslon attorneys who started as summer associates remain friends and colleagues with their fellow summer class members, illustrating the lasting bonds formed at the firm and that I, too, hope to have with my fellow summer associates.
While I valued the work, I also enjoyed the many social events that helped me to connect with colleagues and explore downtown Minneapolis. Some of my favorite moments included making crafts at Upstairs Circus, attending Twins games, and building a house with Habitat for Humanity! I fell in love with the city’s culture, arts, sports, and history and appreciated how our work intersected with these aspects of Minneapolis.
Having heard so much about Maslon’s reputation and unique culture, my summer experience confirmed everything I had been told. I wouldn’t change a thing and am deeply grateful to everyone at the firm who made it such a memorable experience. I’m already looking forward to returning next summer as a second-year summer associate!
