Voice of Maslon
My summer experience at Maslon was characterized by great people and great work.
Starting with the work – each week, we met with the summer coordinators and the legal talent director, who would, based on our availability and interests, distribute work assignments. These assignments were not hypothetical exercises or busywork, as you might find in other summer programs. Instead, we worked alongside Maslon associates and partners on real cases, involving substantive and difficult legal issues.
Whether it was assisting in drafting a brief, researching and writing a memorandum on a key issue in a developing matter, or attending and observing mediations, depositions, and appellate oral arguments, the work was consistently meaningful and hands-on. By working on a variety of different assignments – each involving a different area of the law and requiring different skills – I was able to understand the practice areas I liked and those I was less drawn to. And when we communicated our interests, the summer coordinators made an effort to align our future assignments with areas that we liked or wanted to explore further. I left the summer having learned a great deal and with a clearer sense of the type of work I was passionate about.
The work was not only interesting and rewarding, but it was done collaboratively and as a team. Every time I was given an assignment, I felt like a genuine part of the team working on that case. I regularly met with the attorneys on the case – both partners and associates – to discuss the project, ask questions, and receive feedback. One of the highlights of my summer experience was working alongside my fellow summer associates. We frequently discussed the cases we were working on, exchanged ideas, and supported each other throughout the summer.
Beyond the work, every single person I worked with and met at Maslon was kind, welcoming, and generous with their time. The firm made all of us summer associates feel as though we were part of the Maslon community. The summer events – whether it was the associate or partner dinner, the Twins or Loons games, or the attorney retreat – were not only extremely enjoyable but also gave us opportunities to meet and build relationships with Maslon attorneys and staff in a relaxed setting.
I could not have asked for a better experience. I left the summer with a clear sense of what it is like to be an attorney at Maslon and the feeling that I had made lasting relationships.
