Business Development Manager
Maslon LLP is seeking a Business Development Manager to join the firm’s sole office in Minneapolis. Founded in 1946, Maslon is among the largest full-service law firms in Minnesota, but one of few to resist merger with a national firm. POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Business Development Manager will work directly with attorneys and other key stakeholders to execute the firm’s strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening client relationships, growing revenue, and raising the firm’s profile. This person will report to the Director of Marketing and Business Development and collaborate closely with the firm’s Senior Marketing Communications Manager, as well as the Marketing and Business Development Specialist.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Business development planning, coaching, and training. Help each attorney create a business plan that aligns with the goals of their practice group. Provide accountability, coaching, and support to attorneys, and help them identify new business opportunities. Organize internal business development training.
Pitches and proposals. Lead the Marketing team’s involvement in all pitches, proposals, and RFP responses, ensuring the inclusion of relevant firm experience and project managing through completion.
Business development research. Lead the Marketing team’s fulfillment of requests for competitive intelligence, including deal and litigation analytics. Collaborate with the firm’s library services and leverage a suite of research tools to produce intel on clients and potential clients quickly and effectively.
Attorney profile-raising. Collaborate with Senior Marketing Communications Manager to identify and maximize profile-raising opportunities—such as conferences, organizational involvement, speaking engagements, or writing opportunities—that will raise the firm’s profile in targeted industries or practice areas.
Events and sponsorships. Lead the business development strategy underpinning events and sponsorships, maximizing the business development value of each. Collaborate with broader Marketing team on planning, promotion, and execution. Identify and evaluate new event and sponsorship opportunities.
Experience management. Leverage relationships with attorneys and involvement in practice group meetings to stay abreast of key matters, deals, and other client work. Collaborate with the broader Marketing team to ensure that publishable results are promoted externally as appropriate.
Client feedback. Support client feedback interviews and surveys, as well as other client-specific programs such as lunch-and-learns, site visits, presentations, etc.
Lateral onboarding. Support the full integration of lateral attorneys to ensure continuity of their existing client relationships and successful incorporation into ongoing Maslon business development efforts.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Interpersonal. Discretion, business acumen, and willingness to build collaborative relationships with stakeholders inside and outside of the firm.
Influence and consensus-building. Proven ability to generate buy-in and make recommendations to firm leadership for starting, continuing, or stopping various initiatives based on ROI.
Communication. Clear and compelling written and verbal communication, as well as experience creating or overseeing the creation of polished presentation materials.
Adaptability. Ability to navigate competing deadlines and shifting priorities with positivity, flexibility, and enthusiasm, even under pressure.
Project management. Ability to lead working teams and “manage up” as needed to advance initiatives.
Ownership and accountability. A high degree of responsibility for the success of projects or initiatives within the position's purview. Comfortable holding others accountable.
Desire to be in the office. Maslon currently employs a hybrid work environment. In-office presence at least three days a week is particularly important for the success of the Business Development Manager.
Additional skills and experience:
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Familiar with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms.
- At least five (5) years of professional experience, with at least three (3) years of experience at a law firm or other professional services firm preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field.

The firm’s expected hiring range for this position is $105,000 - $125,000/year depending on the candidate’s experience, skills, educational and professional background, and overall qualifications.
