Maslon Guides Pioneering Cannabis Business Through Real Estate Purchase

April 19, 2024

As the legal cannabis industry takes root in Minnesota, one company relied on Maslon to get ahead of the competition.

Maslon attorneys were pleased to represent a Minnesota cannabis company in the acquisition of a Le Sueur property where it could establish itself. The newly formed business had learned that city leadership in Le Sueur was open to the idea of working with cannabis entrepreneurs—in contrast to many cities throughout Minnesota that have passed a moratorium on cannabis businesses.

Maslon coordinated with Le Sueur city staff to facilitate necessary zoning adjustments and approval for the company’s anticipated operations, which include cultivation, manufacturing, storage, and potential retail. All city approvals went smoothly.

The cannabis company ultimately secured a building that had been used previously by a Le Sueur icon: Green Giant, whose corporate name is Minnesota Valley Canning Company. As a nod to that proud heritage, Maslon Partner Jon Septer suggested that the new company name itself Minnesota Valley Cannabis Company. The owner loved the idea and asked the city for its blessing on the name. Contacts at the city gave their enthusiastic support.

The deal closed April 19, 2024, making Minnesota Valley Cannabis Company one of the first cannabis businesses in the state to establish a foothold for its operations.

Jon led the effort with assistance from David LaBerge and Samantha Monson.
