Steve Schleicher Discusses the Importance of Public Service at the University of Texas at El Paso Law School Preparation Institute's 25th Anniversary Gala

September 9, 2023

Steve Schleicher, a Maslon partner and chair of the Investigations & White Collar Defense practice group, will present the keynote address on Sept. 9 at the University of Texas at El Paso Law School Preparation Institute's 25th Anniversary Gala.

Steve's address will focus on the ways lawyers and non-lawyers can make meaningful contributions to their communities. Using his own background and experiences, he will highlight the many alternative paths to a rewarding career and encouraging accumulating experiences over titles or dollars. He will also discuss the benefit of diverse teams and shares his own perspective on how to achieve successful results in cases.

The Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) has prepared more than 700 University of Texas at El Paso undergraduates for law school and careers in the legal field. An initiative of the Patti and Paul Yetter Center for Law, it includes a summer program with rigorous courses and training for students to develop critical thinking skills, build strong study habits and prepare for the law school application process.

Steve is a renowned trial lawyer with deep experience in high profile cases. He concentrates his work on high stakes criminal and civil litigation, internal investigations, white collar defense, and appellate practice. Steve’s extraordinary trial skills are well known; he was widely praised for his role as a pro bono special prosecutor in the internationally televised homicide trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. In his white collar criminal defense practice, Steve represents individuals accused of financial crimes involving health care, agriculture, and corporate embezzlement. In 2016, Steve served as a prosecutor on the Jacob Wetterling case, prosecuting Danny Heinrich on federal child pornography charges that led to his confession to Jacob’s kidnapping and murder as well as the recovery of his remains, allowing his family to hold a funeral and grieve his loss.
