Overview
Kimberly Slay is a partner in Maslon's Litigation Group. Recognized as a leading trial lawyer, Kim offers clients the benefit of more than 30 years of experience and a strong track record of winning complex cases in federal and state courts throughout the United States. Kim represents corporate clients in employment litigation, tax audits and assessment, and all types of commercial disputes.
In her employment work, Kim has represented both public and private clients in state and federal court. She represents employers in discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims, unfair competition claims, trade secret, and traditional labor law disputes.
Kim served as assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Revenue and the supervising and chief attorney for the Office of Legal Affairs for the Louisiana Department of Revenue. In both roles, she managed civil and criminal tax litigation for the state. She now utilizes her tax experience to represent companies in audits, assessments, appeals, and all types of tax proceedings.
Kim also leverages significant experience in public service to guide clients through the complexities of federal, state, and local government regulations. She previously served as general counsel for Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, where she gained a deep understanding of government operations and developed relationships with key stakeholders, including legislators, executive branch officials, and state agency personnel. Kim has effectively assisted clients with navigating a multitude of governmental and environmental issues, such as permitting natural resource operations, including mining, water quality, and air quality permits.
Committed to developing the next generation of litigators, Kim recently served as full-time visiting faculty at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, teaching Evidence, Civil Procedure, and Pretrial Litigation.
