Before I decided to spend the summer with Maslon, I spent many hours researching other law firms. Through my research I learned that, like Maslon, many firms in Minnesota strive for and achieve excellence in representing clients. I also learned that many firms value integrity and profess a dedication to training and mentoring young lawyers. But I chose Maslon because, when its lawyers said they value integrity and care for each other, I believed them. And I was right.
Maslon's summer program aims to provide its summer associates with a realistic experience of life as an associate. From my first assignment to my last, I received substantive work addressing important issues for real clients. I researched legal issues and wrote memoranda dealing with a large range of discovery disputes and motions. I also attended an evidentiary hearing, depositions, and a settlement conference.
Further, every partner with whom I worked genuinely cared about the development of young lawyers. Concern for and commitment to training young lawyers is the surest sign that a firm is a great place to pursue a career. Before each assignment, I met with the assigning lawyer, who thoroughly explained the facts and questions. Everyone welcomed questions and eagerly took advantage of any opportunity to help me better understand the issues. While attending the hearing, depositions, and settlement conference, I observed the lawyers of Maslon at their finest. During and after each event, these highly experienced litigators explained to me the reasons behind their actions and strategies.
In addition to providing formative work experiences, the structure of Maslon's summer program guarantees that summer associates meet and get to know every lawyer in the firm. The summer associate schedule included multiple dinners, almost daily lunches, a Twins game, a segway tour, and a firm-wide retreat in northern Wisconsin. As a result of the many gatherings, I knew the name of every lawyer in the firm by the end of the summer.
I wholeheartedly recommend Maslon to anyone planning to spend a summer with a law firm. I can imagine no better place to become a lawyer.
